Born on the first day of spring in Marseilles in 1873, Balthazar Marchand was the son of a French food and wine trader father, traveling the world, and an Italian chef mother.

Balthazar developed a passion for gourmet and finer things early in life.
His father taught him everything about food and wines and his mother used to run a traditional trattoria in Verona, making and selling fresh, traditional food and delicatessen.
